Quickstart Guide

Review the available configuration, protocol requirements and operational risks before using the service. The following guidance explains the main steps.

Secure Infrastructure

Blockshard operates validator and signing infrastructure using access controls, encryption and monitoring. We do not hold customer wallet keys. Direct validator customers control their withdrawal address; StakeWise validators withdraw to the vault contract, with Blockshard's administrative role described in our Terms. These safeguards cannot eliminate downtime, software, smart-contract or slashing risks.

Operational risks and safeguards

Blockshard provides non-custodial validator infrastructure and does not take custody of customer assets. Validator signing permissions are separate from control over withdrawals. Non-custodial operation does not eliminate operational, protocol or smart-contract risks. The following outlines relevant risks and safeguards.

Tezos operational risks

  1. Signing-key security: Compromised signing credentials can disrupt validator operation and expose the validator to penalties. Validator signing permissions do not, by themselves, provide control of the configured withdrawal address.
  2. Double-signing: A slashable offense that can result in a reduction of staked assets.

Operational safeguards and limitations

  • Separation of duties: Blockshard performs consensus signing without taking custody of customer assets. Consensus signing permissions are separate from customer asset-transfer permissions.
  • Key protection: Restricted signing access and protected key storage can reduce exposure of consensus credentials. They do not eliminate operational or protocol risks.
  • Signing safeguards: Slashing-protection checks are designed to reduce conflicting signatures. Their effectiveness depends on correct configuration and operation; they cannot eliminate slashing risk.Check out our recent article detailing our solution, available for your convenience here.
